The next-generation JK Wrangler is larger than the TJ, with a2-in. longer wheelbase and 3.4-in. wider track, though the two-door model isactually 2.5 in. shorter in overall length than the TJ, allowing for betterapproach and departure angles. The JK is offered in ashort-wheelbase 2-door and a long-wheelbase Unlimited 4-door, both in X, Saharaand Rubicon trim levels. The Unlimited has 20.6 in. added to the JK's 95.4-in.wheelbase, and offers an option of 2x4 rear wheel drive. A 3.8-L EGH V6producing 205 HP will be the base engine, replacing the venerable AMC straight-6engine. The 2.8-L VM Motori turbodiesel straight-4 used in the Liberty isoffered as an option outside of the U.S. A six-speed manual transmission isstandard, with a four-speed automatic transmission offered as an option. Thelower two levels have the Command-Trac NV241 part-time two-speed transfer casewith an optional Trak-Lok limited-slip differential, while the Rubicon uses aRock-Trak version of the NV241 with electronic front- and rear-axle lockingdifferentials. All versions offer off-road tuned ABS and traction control systemwith electronic limited slip differential. A convertible soft top is standardequipment, and an optional 3-piece modular hardtop allows the sides to beremoved. Although the doors can still be removed, power windows and door lockswill be offered for the first time. This is also the first generation of theWrangler to have a change in the tail lamps.
