Jon Spence of New Hampshire and Jason Grindell of Maine are both members of the Western Maine Mountain Jeepers of Bethel, Maine. Jon Spence's '53 CJ-3B (with license plate BBB) has been seen in the past on CJ3B.info in its former peacock blue paint, but is now repainted in orange. It has a mostly-stock drivetrain except for a T-98 four-speed from a Postal Jeep. Jon built the tub himself, using 3/16" plate on the rockers and corners.
Jason Grindell's blue '54 is seriously modified under its stock exterior. Jason has put in a Buick 225 V6, a Dana 30 axle in the front, and a high-pinion Dana 44 built from a Ford front axle in the rear. Other additions include a T98 transmission, Detroit lockers, Holbrook springs, and power-steering from a Ford van.
Gabrielle Goodwin gave us these photos of Jon and Jason's Jeeps in January, and says, "They were taken in Bethel during our winter club run; we went trail blazing in the snow except we never actually made it to the trail head we usually run. These pics are the main access road."
The photos really give a great sense of what the trip was like, so we thought we'd add some of the dialogue that you might have heard. Click any of the pictures for a full-size copy (100K JPEG) -- without the balloons!
Thanks to Gabby Goodwin for the great photos. -- Derek Redmond
